| Abstract | The increasing growth of global research output has led to the development of quantitative indicators known as research metrics, in academic evaluation. Indicators such as citation counts, h-index, impact factors, and altmetrics are widely used to assess research productivity and influence. While these metrics provide standardized and scalable evaluation tools, their growing use has raised concerns about validity, fairness, and unintended consequences. This article examines current trends and challenges in the application of research metrics. It highlights methodological and ethical issues associated with metric-based assessment and emphasizes the need for balanced evaluation. The study argues that quantitative indicators should be combined with qualitative peer review and contextual interpretation. It concludes that research metrics are valuable but should not serve as sole measures of academic quality. |
