| Abstract | India's higher education system has undergone significant transformations since independence, yet challenges persist in achieving equitable access, quality, and relevance. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 aims to address these issues through holistic reforms. This paper examines the current status of higher education in India, critically evaluates the evolution of the system since independence, and assesses the implementation status of NEP 2020. Analyzing policy documents, reviews, and existing literature, the study identifies key challenges, evaluates policy initiatives, and highlights opportunities and hurdles in NEP 2020's implementation. The findings underscore the need for coordinated efforts to transform India's higher education system into an inclusive, innovative, and globally competitive ecosystem. |
