| Abstract | Parliamentary democracy is the cornerstone of India's constitutional and political system. It ensures that the executive remains accountable to the legislature and ultimately to the people. The Constitution of India establishes a democratic framework based on the principles of popular sovereignty, rule of law, federalism, secularism, and social justice. Over the decades, parliamentary democracy has contributed significantly to political stability, democratic participation, and socio-economic development. However, it also faces numerous contemporary challenges such as political instability, criminalization of politics, corruption, declining parliamentary debates, misuse of constitutional institutions, electoral malpractices, and the spread of misinformation through digital media. This study examines the constitutional principles governing parliamentary democracy in India and analyzes the major contemporary challenges affecting its functioning. |
