From Literary Texts to Digital Tools: Innovative Approaches in Teaching English Language and Literature

Author(s) Dr. G. Yadagiri

Abstract The rapid diffusion of digital technologies has reshaped the teaching of English language and literature across secondary and higher education. This paper examines how digital tools — including corpus and text-analysis software, gamified platforms, digital storytelling applications, and generative artificial intelligence — are being integrated into English language and literature classrooms to foster engagement, critical thinking, and linguistic competence. Drawing on the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework, the paper situates digital integration within a broader pedagogical logic that balances technological affordances with disciplinary content and instructional method. The discussion synthesizes recent empirical and review literature on digital humanities pedagogy, gamification in language learning, mobile-assisted language learning, and generative AI in writing instruction, tracing both documented benefits — improved motivation, learner autonomy, and analytical depth — and persistent challenges, including unequal digital access, teacher preparedness, and concerns about academic integrity. The paper argues that innovative technology integration in English studies is most effective when treated not as a substitute for close reading and language practice but as an extension of it, embedded within teacher-designed frameworks that preserve critical and interpretive rigor. Implications for curriculum design, teacher training, and future research are outlined, with attention to classroom contexts where infrastructural constraints shape adoption.
