| Abstract | Vamana Karma is one of the principal Shodhana procedures of Panchakarma and is primarily employed for the elimination of aggravated Kapha Dosha through the upper route. It also has therapeutic relevance in certain conditions involving Kapha-associated Pitta and disorders characterized by excessive accumulation of Doshas. Unlike ordinary vomiting, Vamana is a systematically planned therapeutic procedure preceded by appropriate Deepana-Pachana, Snehana and Svedana and followed by carefully regulated post-procedure dietary management. The procedure includes administration of specific Vamaka Yoga, observation of the number and nature of Vegas, assessment of Shuddhi and subsequent Samsarjana Krama. The pharmacodynamic explanation of Vamana is based upon the characteristic properties of Vamaka Dravyas, particularly Ushna, Tikshna, Sukshma, Vyavayi and Vikasi Gunas. These properties facilitate mobilization, liquefaction and transportation of morbid Doshas towards Amashaya, followed by their expulsion through the oral route under the influence of Udana Vayu. The present review critically examines the classical principles, indications, contraindications, preparatory measures, therapeutic procedure, assessment and probable mechanism of Vamana Karma and highlights its systematic nature as a bio-purificatory intervention in Ayurveda. |
