| Abstract | The government of India had extended tacit support to Tamil separatism in Sri Lanka, including secret military training imparted to a host of violent Tamil secessionist organizations. But the two major parties in Tamil Nadu, the ruling AIADMK and the Opposition DMK, openly supported the separatist movement that was raging in the northern and eastern provinces of the island nation. In the end, the LTTE, which had emerged as the only Tamil separatist militant group after eliminating others and which refused to accept the 1987 Indo-Sri Lanka Accord, turned its guns on India. It ended up assassinating former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi purportedly to prevent him from coming back to power and sending the IPKF once again into Sri Lanka. |
